Fair Isle Tam

Last week, I wrote about my adventures at Stitches West and how on Saturday, I took a class on Traditional Fair Isle Tams.

I must say, it was worth it.  Best money I've ever spent.

The class was with Beth Brown-Reinsel of KnittingTraditions.com, and she was one of the most wonderful knitting teachers I've ever had.  Everything that she said was clear and concise.  She taught multiple methods for each technique, but never in a way where you got them confused with each other.  She broke the group up into small sections so you could see better, but you never felt like you had to wait for her, since there was always something more to do.
She taught extensively about Tams themselves, their construction, and their makeup, and with the nature of Tams as they are, you were able to work steadily as she went around from person to person and checked your work.

The class was over a morning and afternoon session, each one three hours, so it was a long day, but it didn't feel like it.  By the end of the class, I had almost finished the Tam, and quickly finished it up and wove the ends in that night at the house with the ladies.

The end result was a child's Tam, which was a little sad because you couldn't wear your accomplishment right away, but I think it would probably have been overwhelming if we had tried to make an adult tam in that time.

She also had dozens of beautiful examples and tips for great ways to improve our knitting as we went on and other resources to use to create our own patterns.  We got to experiment with color (and I learned that I probably should have switched the green and orange placements in my tam).

I am so glad I took this class.

Oh, and here's my cute little finished tam!

STITCHES West (Or, my conversion)

Saturday Getup
As I mentioned last week, I attended STITCHES West this February.

It was my first event of its kind, and it was incredible.

There were rows and rows of booths, hundreds of them, and amazing classes, and people everywhere that appreciated my knitwear.  And things to learn and things to do and things to make and camaraderie to be had and things to buy!

I fell in love.

Sunday Getup
My local Stitch 'n Bitch group decided to drive down for the weekend and rent an AirBnB.  It was a delightful, amazing weekend, where I finished my Field to Forrest socks, and began a project I will surely post on soon!

It was my first time, and so I went all in and attended nine hours of classes, and I loved them all!

And you know what I figured?  I figured I'd wear as much knitwear as possible, because it was the only time it could be appreciated, right?

So, on Saturday, I wore:

Miss Babs Yowza
And I took a class on
Traditional Fair Isle Tams.
Debbie Bliss Blue Faced Leicester

On Sunday, I wore:

At the market, I bought:
(Don't worry, all of this fell into the third clause of my Cold Sheep Commitment.)

And I absolutely will be returning next year!  I can't wait!

Field to Forrest Socks

Last summer, when I made my first order from KnitPicks.com in order to start my first sweater, I also purchased a grass-green hank of painted sock yarn called Springtime Tonal Stroll, which I absolutely loved.  It's certainly a spring color, bright and airy, and so I figured a lace-like pattern would suit it well, and as I was continuing with my Cold Sheep Commitment, I decided a nice short-sock pattern would be just the thing.

I found a pattern on Ravelry entitled Water to Sky Anklets, knit in a similar blue tonal yarn, and loved it.  Converting the name to account for the green, I call these my Field to Forrest anklets, and they fit beautifully!

I finished them on February 20, while hanging out with my Stitch 'n Bitch group in preparation for STITCHES West, which I shall write about next week!

Song of the Sahara

After running out of yarn on the Chad Lake Shawl, I picked up the third and final set of yarn from the Article Pract closing sale - a beautiful Alchemy Silk Purse that I fell in love with the moment I saw it.  I had never seen anything that I couldn't resist buying no matter how hard I tried, but this just swept me off my feet.  I bought two hanks, thinking it would be enough for a cowl, and stroked it preciously for a few months.

I finally set to work knitting it up into Louise Zass-Bangham's Song of the Sea Cowl, even though the yarn was thicker than called for, and absolutely adore the results.  The pattern was a breeze to follow, and I loved the variety.

I did, however, run out of yarn, so I ordered a third hank (again, rule one!) around the same time that I ordered my extra yarn for the Chad Lake Shawl, and set it aside to work on my Swiffer Cover and my Car Cup Holders until it arrived.

When it did come, I fell in love all over again, and had the end result of one of the most beautiful pieces of clothing I have ever knit myself.  I'm in love.  I call it Song of the Sahara and wear it proudly.

Dedri said this week in Sophie's Universe CAL, our blankets would come out like bowls, and mine certainly did!  I do like it so far, though.  Mine has been "bowl"ing for the past few weeks, though, so I'm hoping I'm not doing something wrong!

Sunset Socks

As part of my Cold Sheep Commitment, I pulled out a pair of skeins I bought almost a year ago in order to make socks for the Mister.  I decided that I wanted to use bigger needles, after my horrible incident with the forever-socks last time, and a simple pattern, after my Christmas Skirt.

Low and behold, these puppies knit up beautifully!  I made an after-thought heel, which worked okay, but was teeny tiny on the hubby.

Well, here are the pictures!  Hope you like them!
